Haha I'm under the impression that the entire environment of (I assume) the VMs are outdated so that the older/legacy exploits are successful. At least for the more primitive attacks like this one, it was more for fun or as an exercise.

Strange that you were able to overwrite the dtor section...are u aware that new gcc versions disable invoking the destructor function if there isnt any in the code?
